Once again, it’s Sunday! Here is Minnesota, this weekend had the typical August weather: hot and humid. So, it was the perfect weather to stay inside and get caught up on chores! There was also some time for Netflix.
This week’s pick for a lazy Sunday binge watch is BoJack Horseman. BoJack Horseman is a Netflix original show, and is currently on its second season. It is an animated series about a washed up actor (who is also a horse) as he tries to revamp his career and dig himself out of the Hollywood disillusionment he is falling prey to. We also get to see what is happening in the lives of those around him, like his agent Princess Caroline (a cat), his rival Mr. Peanut Butter (a dog) along with a handful of humans: his roommate Todd, and his friend Diane.
The interesting thing about this show is that the characters are a mix of animals and people, and even though they are aware of this fact, the animals and people are treated the same (including being in relationships together). This was hard for me to get used to because it’s really weird. Obviously in the real world animals and people shouldn’t be in relationships. Somehow, since this is cartoon, it doesn’t seem so weird.
One of the most fun things about this show is that there are some fantastic voice actors. BoJack is voiced by Will Arnett (Gob from Arrested Development), but the regular cast also includes Aaron Paul, Alison Brie, Paul F. Thompkins and Amy Sedaris. There are also guest voice actors like Stanley Tucci, Lisa Kudrow, and Stephen Colbert. That’s a lot of star power for one show! It’s fun to watch episodes and try to guess who is voicing the characters, or being surprised by the names in the end credits.
This is definitely not a show for everyone. There is some very dark subject matter, even though it’s animated. If you like shows like Family Guy, South Park and dark comedies this might be a show you would like.
Have you seen BoJack Horseman? Leave me your thoughts in the comments!
